ACHIEVING MDGS IN AFRICA "A MIRAGE"
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Looking at the issue of the MDGS and the possibilities of African countries achieve these goals come 2015, one will begin to wonder how on earth can this be possible. With the widening gap in poverty level among the rich and poor, there is no sign whatsoever to show that these goals can be achieved come even 2030. When we talk of the MDGS, and the relevant goals, one will find out that Poverty is the most crucial of all the goals because it is a goal that when it is solved it can be a boost to achieving other goals. That means when we achieve goal 1, we can equall achieve 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. I take Nigeria as a case study. In recent years now Nigeria has witnessed increased weath in most fronts but what happens to the poverty line? You will agree with me that while the country makes more revenue from the sale of crude oil, gas, and other internally generated revenue, poverty continues to increase and widen. This then means that the increase in wealth does not reflect in the welbeing of her citizens and this is the same scenario with other african countries. One will then ask " IF THIS IS THE CASE, WHAT IS THE HOPE OF THE AFRICAN COUNTRIES WITH RESPECT TO ACHIEVING THE MDG GOALS."

It still beats my heart that seven years after the MDG declaration the millions of Nigerians do not have the knowledge of what these goals are. I think it is has now become imperative for more awareness to be created if we hope to at least coming close to achieving 1/3rd of the goals.

Best wishes
